ANIMALS ARE THE FIRST VICTIMS OF PLASTIC POLLUTION

animales victimas plastico

Thousands of kilometres from civilisation, on a remote island in the North Pacific, there are thousands of Albatros chicks suffering due to the extreme speed at which we consume more and more stuff.

On the Midway coast, an isolated and wild place far from anywhere, where nearly no humans go, but where tonnes of our human-produced plastic waste is brought by the sea and ends up spread along the shore, and where the female adult Albatros collects it to offer her chicks.

What happens next is one of the cruelest (and invisible) injustices of the plastic consumption story.

The Albatros young, who have been fed on our waste, suffer a slow agonising death, suffercating, suffering cuts and eventually dying from malnutrition due to not having more room in their digestive systems.

After some time, when the dead body starts to decompose, the pieces of plastic are still to be seen, waiting for their next victim.

This reality has been filmed by the artist Chris Jordan in his documentary Midway, whereby he raises a key question with his audience: Do we have the courage to face the realities of our time?

ANIMALS PLASTC’S GLOBAL VICTIMS

The truth is, that this tragedy is not only affecting the Albatros population in the North Pacific. Plastic has also been found in the stomachs of turtles in the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Pacific, and also in dophins on the Florida coast, as well as in beached whales from far away places such as the Philippines, the Cape of Palos and the Scottish Isles.

Marine animals are not the only ones affected.

It is now common to find tens of kilos of plastic in the stomachs of sacred cows in India and in the digestive systems of the camels in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where it is estimated that 50% of animal deaths in these populations is due to the ingestion of plastic.

ANIMALS AND PLASTIC: A BIGGER PROBLEM THAN THINK.

The plastic problem and how it affects our fauna is, without any doubt, bigger than we like to believe..

In the case of the whales, it is calculated that only between 2 and 6 % of those affected by plastic end up on the coast, which means that by far the majority of the whales dying due to plastic remain unseen out at sea.

This shows us that society is not aware of the enormous problem that plastic represents for marine life.

If we can’t see the extent of the problem with the whales – the biggest animals on earth, just imagine what is going on with other smaller members of the animal kingdom, like seahorses, crabs, and fish.

THE IMPACT OF EVERY PLASTIC COATED PURCHASE

Just like Chris Jordan, we believe that courage is requiered in order to face this hard reality.

The data, the photographs and the animals found up and down our coastlines do not lie: the convenience of using plastic is responsible for the death of millions of innocent creatures.

We are facing a global problem, the size of which is still impossible to calculate, but infinitely bigger than we think. And meanwhile, plastic production keeps on increasing.

We are sure of one thing: if every single person could understand that the same plastic lid from the water bottle that they have just purchased will end up in the stomach of a Albatros chick, our consumption of plastic would reduce dramatically.

YOU HAVE THE COURAGE TO FACE THE REALITIES OF OUR TIME

Faced with this problem, you can do something.
Maybe you feel that people aware of this issue, like you, are too few and far between. Maybe you have lost heart, thinking that you can’t change much. Maybe. But, we assure you that any effort towards straightening out this mess could be huge!
