A SHAMPOO BAR VS NATURAL SHAMPOO – ARE THEY THE SAME?

One of the first things to clear up when thinking about using solid shampoo (i.e. a shampoo bar), is that it is not the same as using natural shampoo. Not all shampoo bars are created equal, not all are natural, and even fewer are organic. In fact, it is common to find shampoo bars on the market that contain petrochemicals such as surfactants (SLS), silicones, parabens and phthalates. These substances are known endocrine disruptors that put your health at risk by affecting your hormonal system.

The best alternative to these products is a natural shampoo bar, made from ingredients such as vegetable oils and natural extracts. If you can find an organic version, that would be even better for both you and the planet. By this I mean, a shampoo bar that is made from raw materials that have been grown without the need for pesticides and herbicides.

WHY SWITCH TO USING A NATURAL SHAMPOO BAR?

The benefits of using a natural shampoo bar are endless. Better for your health, easier to use and of course good for the environment. Not to mention making your hair look it’s best.

In fact, the reason why I started using a shampoo bar was purely due to the environmental and health benefits, however since starting to use it each time I go to the hairdresser’s they tell me that my hair is strong and looking beautiful. They say that it is obvious I take very good care it. The truth is (just between you and me), that I don’t do anything special except wash my hair with my non toxic shampoo bar.

This is just one of the advantages of using a shampoo bar. Do you need more? Well, here they are:

  • Lower your plastic consumption: a shampoo bar avoids the need for water in the mix, therefore it doesn’t need packaging.

  • Take care of your health: by washing your hair with a natural shampoo bar you avoid potentially harmful chemicals.

  • Lengthen the time between washes: your hair stays cleaner for longer.

  • Say goodbye to an itchy scalp: natural ingredients reduce the risk of your skin reacting when compared with the common chemicals present in everyday shampoos.

  • Fight shampoo build-up: your hair will end up smoother, shinier and stronger.

  • You’ll have more space in your bathroom: forget about the days when you reached for a bottle of shampoo from the shelf of your shower and 5 others fell to the ground. One single shampoo bar will last you months.

  • Travel without having to worry about liquids: you don’t have to calculate the quantities allowed when passing through airport security, nor do you need to use cling-film to prevent leakages in your luggage.

  • Save money: Can you guess how much it would cost you to buy 3 bottle of shampoo to leave your hair looking perfect, whilst using 100% natural and predominantly organic ingredients? Does €11.70 sound cheap to you? Well, that is exactly what the most expensive natural shampoo bar from Sinplastico offers.

THE ESSENTIAL TIPS AND TRICKS TO ENSURE YOUR TRANSITION TO A SHAMPOO BAR IS A PIECE OF CAKE.

Find your perfect shampoo bar
Perhaps you have already tried using a shampoo bar and it didn’t go all that well. Or maybe you are putting off starting to use a shampoo bar because you are not sure which one to choose. I totally understand. Finding the perfect natural shampoo bar for your hair type is the most important and difficult step in the whole process.

There are shampoos specially formulated for oily hair, different to those shampoo bars for dry hair or fine hair. We also have shampoo bars specifically for short hair, dyed hair, curly hair and dandruff prone hair.

Before deciding on one, don’t hesitate to contact an expert to help choose the best option for you. We would be more than happy to advise you and help you to find the right natural shampoo bar for your hair type.

Be patient
When you start using a shampoo bar your hair needs some time to rid itself of all the accumulated build-up and adapt to your new routine. So, you will need to be patient for the first few days or possibly weeks as your hair may not look the same as always. If you prefer, you can always introduce the change slowly, some people like to start by alternating between their new shampoo bar and their old shampoo routine.

It’s time to appreciate your hair
A natural shampoo bar doesn’t contain synthetic perfumes that make your hair smell of artificial roses, vanilla or exotic fruit. At most, some varieties include essential oils.
This means that your hair will not smell and you may miss the fragrances that the perfumed petroleum derived shampoos contain. However, not smelling is actually the cleaner healthier alternative, given that synthetic perfumes are some of the worst endocrine disruptors.

Use a natural conditioner for extra moisture
By not containing silicones that act by coating the hair to make it feel smooth, you may notice your hair feels more astringent and dry. If you miss some extra conditioning, aim for a natural conditioner such as shea butter, argan oil or coconut oil.

SIMPLE TRICKS OF THE TRADE TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SHAMPOO BAR

1. Apply correctly
In order to apply solid shampoo you must first wet your hair and then massage your head so that the water penetrates all the way in to your scalp. Once your hair is completely soaked through, softly rub the shampoo bar with your hands and onto your head avoiding knotting your hair. Keep in mind that natural shampoos do not foam up as much as their synthetic counterparts, so be careful not to rub it in too much, as you may find you end up with excess shampoo in your hair.

2. Rinse well
Once the shampoo has been applied, rinse your hair well to avoid leaving any product behind. If necessary repeat the process.

3. Alternate your shampoos
It’s a good idea to alternate your shampoo bar with another similar one every now and then . This way your hair comes in contact with different formulas and it will not get used to any one specific product.

4. Store your shampoo bar outside the shower
Perhaps one of the most common mistakes made when using a shampoo bar is to keep it in the shower. This can lead to it being in constant contact with water and thereby causing it to unnecessarily dissolve and go to waste. To make sure this doesn’t happen at your place, keep your shampoo bar in a soap container on a shelf or in a cupboard near (but not inside) your wet area.

5. Let it dry out between uses
To make the most of your shampoo bar it is very important that you allow it to dry out properly between washes. You should let it air dry after each shower and also when you return home from a trip.

6. Divide and conquer
If you like to use your shampoo bar in different places ( at home, at the gym, at the pool) you can buy various shampoo bars or you can split the one you have. I promise that its cleaning power will remain intact.

7. Make the most of every last little piece
Do not throw away the last little shampoo bar scraps, the tiny pieces that slide between your fingers. You can make the most of them by sewing together the sides of a soap saver loofah pouch sponge and putting the leftover pieces inside. They will last you for at least a few more weeks.

We hope that this advice answers some of you questions and motivates you to try a natural shampoo bar.
