HOW TO USE YOUR BINCHOTAN WATER FILTER

The Binchotan charcoal filter offers the most effective and environmentally friendly way to purify and mineralise water. Here are a few tips on how to use it.:

Before first use:

  • Wash the Binchotan charcoal under the tap, brushing it gently to remove any leftover dust, ash or soot.
  • Boil the charcoal in a saucepan of water for 10 minutes.
  • Allow the stick to cool.
  • Place the piece of charcoal gently (so that it doesn’t break) in the bottom of a bottle or jug.
  • Fill the bottle/jug with water.

Which vessel to use:

      • We recommend you use a glass or stainless steel vessel.
      • Use a bottle with a wide mouth so that it will be easy to move the Binchotan around.
      • Choose your piece of charcoal based on the volume of the vessel.

Daily use:

      • Filter the water for 4 to 8 hours, although you can notice the difference in taste depending on the time of exposure.
      • To make life easy, use 2 bottles. One that you leave the charcoal in all the time, and another to store the filtered water in.
      • Fill the bottle containing the charcoal. Once the water has been filtered (4-8 hrs.), transfer the water into the other bottle and then refill the bottle with the Binchotan in it.

Maintenance:

      • Every 3-4 weeks boil the Binchotan charcoal for 10 minutes in order to reactivate it and so that it releases whatever it has filtered out of the water.
      • The Binchotan charcoal is effective for a period of 3 months.

Frequently asked questions:

    • Always use Binchotan with drinkable water.
    • It is best to avoid leaving the water in contact with the Binchotan for more than 48 hours.
    • The water is best filtered at room temperature (it is not necessary to heat the water).
    • Once the water has been filtered, it maintains its benefits even once it has been moved into another bottle and it is no longer in contact with the Binchotan.
    • The filtered water is suitable for use with babies. Take care not to transfer any remnant/piece of charcoal that may have broken off.
    • Don’t use Binchotan with flavoured waters, juices, herbal teas, black teas, etc. First filter the water and then make the drink.
    • It is common that fragments of charcoal break off into the water. There is no need for concern, they can be ingested, charcoal is harmless..
    • Binchotan charcoal can be added to your compost or your organic waste bin. However, you can also give it a second use. It can be used as a fertilizer for your plants, as a deodoriser against shoe and trainer odours, or in the cat litter tray thanks to its porous surface. It is also very useful to help reduce damp in containers, drawers and wardrobes. Finally, it is also useful as protection against electromagnetic waves by hanging it between the user and the electronic appliance in order to clean the air.

  1. Thank you for explaining that you’ll need to boil the Binchotan charcoal every three to four weeks to reactivate it. We just got some of these charcoal sticks to filter our water and have been wondering how to maintain them. We’ll be sure to keep this in mind so they can remain effective for as long as possible.
