cepillos de madera local

When we started on this plastic-free journey, finding a toothbrush that was not made of this particular material was quite a quest.

Therefore, when we created Sinplástico in 2014, one of the first products we launched was a wooden toothbrush with natural sterilized bristles. It was local, eco-friendly and 100% plastic-free… but not vegan.

So, when bamboo toothbrushes appeared on the market, we knew we wanted to include them in our product range.

At the time, we felt it was wonderful to be able to avoid using plastic in these everyday products, as we also have to throw them away and replace them on a regular basis, as recommended by our dentist.

However, even though eco-friendly bamboo toothbrushes were a good vegan alternative at that time, we always felt that maybe we could do better…

Bamboo: a biodegradable material… but one that travels a long way.

Bamboo is a fast growing plant that is generally cultivated in the warm regions of the world, such as Asia, the Americas, Africa and Oceania.

We knew that bamboo was a material grown in faraway places, that had to travel long distances to get to our warehouse, and that there was a corresponding carbon footprint left behind.

In fact, our philosophy has always been to back locally made products wherever possible, meaning we stock kitchen utensils and bathroom & body care products made from European timbers such as beechwood, boxwood and olive wood instead of those made from raw materials coming from further away.

The flip side? In the case of vegan toothbrushes we didn’t have many alternatives.

This is until, after nearly 7 years of searching, we found a (nearly) perfect vegan wooden toothbrush.

An environmentally friendly wooden toothbrush that is vegan and that has replacement heads? It is now a reality

  • Made of beechwood from sustainable French forests.

  • Replacement heads available, so that the only part that you have to throw into the rubbish are the nylon filaments, but you can keep using the handle for years to come.

  • Vegan.

  • Made by hand, less than 1000 kilometres away from our warehouse.

We know what you are going to ask: “So, are you going to keep on selling bamboo toothbrushes?”

The answer is yes and no.

  •  We are going to stop selling bamboo toothbrushes that do not have replacement heads.
In fact, in our shop you will find the last few that we have in stock and when they have sold out we are no longer going to include them in our range.
  •   We will continue to sell bamboo toothbrushes that have replacement heads.
For one reason only: there are people who have already purchased the handles of these bamboo toothbrushes, so we think it’s only fair to give them the option of continuing to use this handle that could last them for years, meaning they don’t need to buy a new one.
  • We will also keep selling locally made wooden single piece toothbrushes.
So that you have locally made choices, in case the option to use a replacement head is not for you.

  1. India might be seeing them in the market just now but when toothbrushes were first designed in China, they were made with bamboo. After all, bamboo grows easily in China and is a readily available raw material.
